About Dr. Torben Smith
With over 20 years of experience teaching A-Level Chemistry, I've spent a significant portion of my career as the Head of Faculty at Bilborough 6th Form College in Nottingham, one of the consistently high-performing A-level Chemistry departments in the UK. In addition to my full-time job, I've been offering face-to-face chemistry tutoring to a small number of students each year. In September 2023 I reduced my hours and leadership role at the college to free up more time for A-level tutoring.
Alongside expert tutoring, I provide help between sessions and a shared drive with personalised resources and topic folders. This includes access to some pre-recorded lessons, modified exam papers, and lots more. I hold a doctorate in organic chemistry and have a particularly thorough understanding of the AQA and OCR syllabuses. If you're local, you might find individuals now in Medical or Dental school who I have tutored in the past. Many of my tutees have seen their Chemistry grades improve significantly, with jumps from a D grade in year 12 mocks to an A grade in the real exams being quite common.
A Track Record of Excellence
In the tutoring season of 2023, all my year 13 students achieved an A* grade. Reflecting on my day job, over 50% of my past A-level students achieved an ALPS grade 1, placing them in the top 1% of the country for Value Added (A-level vs GCSE). The majority of the rest were ALPS 2 (top 10% VA).
I’ve been teaching A-level Chemistry full time for 20 years, and all of my classes have achieved exceptional results in terms of grades and value added.
Beyond Tutoring
In addition to tutoring, I can offer assistance with UCAS applications, motivation, study skills, exam technique, entrance exams, and more. My students receive examination questions from multiple exam boards as I have access to all UK boards and beyond.
